Remember the excitement and joy you felt as a kid when you’d hear the song heralding the arrival of the ice cream truck? Now an L.A. hipster has reinvented the experience in a way that even grown-ups can enjoy.
Leyla Safai’s fleet of converted mail trucks (in colors like baby pink and mint green) replace that insistent little calliope tune with hard-core rock and dance beats. (Many of the featured tracks are by the band Hearts Revolution, which was co-founded, not coincidentally, by Safai.) The trucks operate under the name HeartsChallenger, and they can currently be found on the streets of New York, Los Angeles and Miami and parked outside special events like music festivals, fairs and even private house parties.
What really sets HeartsChallenger apart is the merchandise they stock. Not content with the standard soft serve, the trucks offer up an array of rare international frozen treats, like Japanese mochi and Armenian teddy bear bars.
They also offer up a wide range of non-food products, such as Cobrasnake tee shirts, edgy magazines, tote bags and kitschy toys and trinkets.
HeartsChallenger is proof that, with a little imagination, even the most childish of summer pleasures can be given a fresh spin for a whole new demographic.
Whether an ice cream truck or a taste of a different vegetable or fruit in season, enjoy new summer pleasures with your family!

ROSEMARY PORTERHOUSE STEAKS FOR DAD'S DAY
A great steak for the grill this weekend!
Ingredients and Instructions:
1 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup pitted Kalamata olives, chopped
1 Tbsp. finely chopped fresh dill
1 clove garlic, minced
2 porterhouse steaks, cut 1 to 1-1/4-inch thick (about 1 lb. each)
1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 Tbsp. finely chopped fresh rosemary
3/4 tsp. kosher salt or salt
1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
Snipped fresh rosemary (optional)
1. For Olive Mayo, in bowl combine mayonnaise, olives, dill, and garlic. Cover; refrigerate up to 1 week.
2. Brush steaks with oil. Combine rosemary, salt, and pepper; rub on steaks. Let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.
3. For charcoal grill, place steaks on rack directly over medium-hot coals. Cover and grill 9 to 11 minutes for medium rare (145 degrees F), turning once. (For gas grill, preheat; set to medium-high. Cover and grill as above.)
4. Sprinkle steaks with fresh rosemary; cut in serving portions. Serve with Olive Mayo and Herbed Potatoes and Squash.
Serves 4 to 6.
