NEWS & ARTICLE CLIPS
...about the food industry we shop in as parents and educators...and family nutrition and health issues today.
Well, by now your family is in the 'swing' of the back to school mode. The beach has given way to the fall classroom. Although meals and nutrition are on my radar as a registered dietitian, I also feel it is very important to keep parents up to date on trends in the tech world and what kids are exposed to and wanting.
See the article below to help you stay up to date this fall:
The days of sending your child off to school with some freshly sharpened No. 2 pencils and a new three-ring binder are long gone. These days, progressive schools are turning to ‘smart boards’ as a teaching tool, and tech marketers are targeting returning scholars with a crop of fun and cool new technologies for use in the home or classroom.
Here’s a roundup of just a few:
ASUS Scented Laptops
Perhaps aimed more at teen girls than boys, ASUS has a new line of colorful laptops that emit unique fragrances that match the graphics: Floral Blossom is pink with a flowery smell, Morning Dew is pastel green with a fresh “morning” fragrance, while Aqua Ocean has a sea-inspired scent. At this point, no word on how long the fragrances will last, but perhaps for this particular audience longevity is not such a big concern.
Just in time for the new school year, Verizon and partner UTStarcom have brought out a new phone for tweens, called the Blitz. It has an electric blue cover and is the first youth-focused phone with a full QWERTY keyboard to make it easier to send those all important text-messages (because who passes notes anymore?).
Sony Bubble Headphones
No self-respecting student leaves the house without his or her MP3 player. How, then, to stand out from the sea of earbuds around them on the way to school? Sony has a new line of hip headphones that look like colorful opalescent bubbles (and come in half a dozen colors). They go on sale this month in Japan, with the U.S. to follow.
Why take notes on paper, when your pen can be a computer in and of itself? Created for the tween market, the Fly Pentop Computer can write just like any other pen, but it's able to read handwriting and turn it into digital text that can be edited or printed, or allow users to interact with what they drew – for example, a student can draw a series of digits on a surface, and the drawing itself will function as a working calculator. Or users can draw a piano keyboard, and use it to ‘play’ a song. When the tip is retracted, Pentop becomes a stylus that can interact with a range of applications from French and Spanish Translators to Harry Potter-themed games.
