Is flax oil better than fish oil?

This is by far the most popular question. With the increasing popularity of vegetarian eating and mounting fears about mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, in seafood, consumers often think that the vegetarian version of omega-3 from flax oil is superior to fish oil for heart health. Although our bodies convert alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) into eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, the conversion rate is slow. In addition, flax oil contains a high concentration of ALA. Although still controversial, high ALA intake has been linked to a higher prostate cancer risk. Until more is known, men are advised to choose a fish source for heart-healthy omega-3s instead of plant-sourced ALA.

Is organic better?

The advantages of eating foods containing fewer chemicals, pesticides, and hormones are certainly appealing. A decade ago, organic was a term mostly associated with produce, but this is no longer the case. Grocery aisles are filled with organic products, as many packaged products have an organic version. Packaged products labeled organic are not always healthier, such as organic candy, chips, frozen pizzas, and cola. In 2005, the U.S. organic industry reached $14.6 billion in sales. It is one of the fastest-growing categories in the food industry, growing at roughly 20% annually. Remember that overall food choice is more important and that 3,000 calories from organic food is still 3,000 calories.

¾ cup gazpacho (no bread)

1 ¼ cup spinach, boiled and drained

SURF and TURF snacks

1 thin slice smoked salmon

1 ½ pieces California Roll

1/3 Slim Jim

1 ½ strips bacon

2 thin slices turkey breast

VEGAN snacks

½ Nature Valley Oats ‘N Honey Granola Bar

1 Lightlife Smart Dogs meatless Frank

1 jar (4oz.) vegetable baby food

½ cup vegetarian barley soup

2 pieces Turtle Island Tofurky Jurky

COMBO snacks

½ wedge of honeydew melon with thin slice honey ham

3 Nabisco Original Wheat Thins topped with low fat cream cheese and thin slice of pickle

½ cup diced watermelon mixed with 1 tbsp. low fat yogurt

3 saltines each topped with two thin slices turkey pepperoni

MEDITERRANEAN snacks

15 seedless grapes

4 pimiento stuffed Queen Olives

7 almonds

2 oz. red wine

2 medium tomatoes or 16 cherry tomatoes

1 ½ cups chopped cucumber with ¾ tbsp olive oil squirt of lemon juice and salt

BOTTOMS UP snacks

1 cup V8 100% Vegetalbe Juice

1 cup light apple juice

1 cup coffee with 1 tbsp. half and half and 1 tsp. Sugar

1 diet root beer float with ½ cup light vanilla ice cream

6 oz. Bud Light

Unlimited Ice Tea

CRUNCHY snacks

5 potato chips

2 cups light microwave popcorn

4 low fat Honey Maid Honey Grahams

11 dry roasted peanuts

FROZEN snacks

6 oz. Dannon Light and Fit nonfat yogurt

½ low fat ice cream sandwich

1 Breyers “Pure Fruit” Fruit and Cream Bar

1 Dove Ice Cream Miniature
