Maybe you have heard the buzz last season about a new TV show on families and eating....
Read below for an interesting interview from a publication called the "ADA Times" (published by the American Dietetic Association) talking with Lisa Hark, PhD, RD and host of TLC’s Honey We’re Killing the Kids!
Times: Have you always been in television?
L.H.: No, in fact I started out as an outpatient dietitian specializing in diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and pediatric nutrition. In 1990, I began training medical students and residents about nutrition at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and have been there ever since. I had always been interested in working with the media and over the years have been interviewed as a nutrition expert many times. But until now, my medium was mostly the printed word.
Times: How did you come to star in a television show?
L.H.: I was asked to audition for a new show by a producer from The Learning Channel, who had found me through the university’s Web site. The show, Honey We’re Killing The Kids!, originally came from the United Kingdom and TLC was creating a version that Americans can easily relate to. After hundreds of candidates were screened I was asked to audition, which involved talking to a family in their home, so TLC would get a feel for how I would put my stamp on the show.
Times: What is your role on the show?
L.H.: Honey We’re Killing The Kids! is a nutritional lifestyle series for families, although everyone can benefit from it. Each episode begins with a set of parents traveling to New York City, where I show them how their kids mightlook in their forties if they continue on an unhealthy path. This computer imaging serves well as an unsettling motivation to start a healthier routine. I then visit their home once a week for three weeks. Each week I give the family three new lifestyle rules. At the end of the episode, the entire family returns to New York and I show them new images of their “future selves” if they continue to follow the rules and a healthier lifestyle.
The show,"Honey We’re Killing the Kids!" also features another registered dietitian: Keith Ayoob, EdD, RD, FADA, is the show’s nutrition consultant, performing the dietary and nutritional evaluations and conferring with Lisa Hark about recommendations for families.
Honey We’re Killing the Kids! airs on TLC on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET.
Try the easy recipe below:
RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Makes 4 servings
Start to Finish: 10 minutes
4 ripe tomatoes, seeded and diced
1/4 red onion, minced
2 jalapeño peppers, seeded (optional) and diced
1/2 bunch cilantro leaves, chopped
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice salt and pepper, freshly ground to taste
1. The only item that needs adult attention is the jalapeño and its seeds. For more heat, keep the seeds and chop.
2. Younger children can chop the cilantro while mom dices the tomato, onion and peppers. Be sure to have them put everything in the bowl and handle the mixing.
Check out a new water drink company that was founded by Kara Goldin, a mother of four who cares about providing healthy beverages to families....she talks more below about Hint..
The idea behind Hint is simple: pure water, nature's original refreshment, accented with a hint of natural flavor.
No sugar, no artificial sweeteners: Hint is a refreshing alternative to sodas, juice and other sweetened drinks and it tastes great.
Sound good? It tastes even better.
We thank you for trying Hint, hope that you and your family enjoy it, and wish you excellent health.
Hint is available in many specialty markets and is also sold in fine spas and hotels. If Hint is not yet available in your favorite store, please ask for it.
Hint is adding new stores, spas and hotels every week and are also interested in school and corporate lunch programs.
